What is epiphany?

Epiphany, or Three Kings' Day in reference to the three wise men Melchior, Gaspard and Balthazar, is a Christian feast that takes place on January 6. It celebrates the coming of the Messiah and is symbolized by the sharing of the galette des rois, a French tradition. With its round shape and golden color, the galette symbolizes the sun and contains a bean hidden inside.

How is the Epiphany celebrated?

A bean is hidden in every Galette des Rois. Traditionally, this is a round puff pastry cake with a frangipane filling. The person who finds the bean in his or her slice of galette becomes the king or queen, and can be crowned with the galette des rois crown.
